The volunteer center of the ADRA Czech Republic in Ostrava provides much-needed psychological support
The volunteer center of the ADRA Czech Republic in Ostrava has been involved in helping people arriving from Ukraine since the first days of the war. In addition to helping with administration upon arrival in the Czech Republic at the Ostrava KACPU, thanks to the Tereza Maxová Children’s Foundation, the volunteer center is also involved in psychological support for newcomers.
Psychological help is mainly sought by mothers with children, mainly from Kharkiv, Odesa, Mariupol or Luhansk region. Children have strong emotional expressions, cry, wake up at night, and women are worried about the health or lives of their husbands. Women have a great need to talk about the war, to talk about the traumas they have experienced.
So far, 848 support interviews and 273 crisis interventions have taken place in cooperation with the Tereza Maxová Children’s Foundation.
After the intervention, the psychological state stabilizes and people receive information about the next steps, about administrative help after arrival, social support from the state, accommodation, or newly created communities within the city and nearby municipalities. In case of more difficult cases, additional psychological help is offered in the contact center or outpatient care.
