A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake has struck Myanmar and Thailand, causing significant damage. Over 3145 men, women and children have lost their lives. Many more are injured. Also bordering Bangladesh, India, Laos and China have felt the earthquake. ADRA’s teams and local partners are on the ground, have assessed the most urgent needs and have started providing urgently needed help.
1696 households were supported with multi-purpose cash assistance. In the initial assessment, the majority of interviewed earthquake affected men and women had indicated, that they would prefer targeted cash or voucher assistance over standardized relief boxes. Given that markets in their area were functioning and people can access them and buy whatever they need most urgently (food, water, hygiene items, medical aid or shelter repair material), this approach was chosen.

Here you see an example of the destruction in Myanmar’s 2nd largest city: Mandalay.

Our ADRA teams have been and will continue assessing the most urgent needs in the affected region, ensuring we can respond swiftly and effectively. With your help, we deliver aid to cover the most urgent needs such as food, water, shelter and medical aid.

These are the first 3 steps in any disaster response:
- Damage & Needs Assessment – ADRA teams are evaluating the extent of destruction and identifying urgent needs.
- Strategic Planning – We are coordinating with local partners to determine the most effective relief response.
- Rapid Deployment – Once the needs are clear, ADRA provides emergency aid efforts to support affected communities.
Mario Oliveira, Head of the Emergency Management Unit at ADRA International, confirms: ‘This is a major disaster, and ADRA is mobilized to respond immediately.’
