World Day of Social Justice

Integration through village level Health Groups

“In a remote rural community in Mozambique, far from the bustling cities, I encountered a 20-year-old young man named Daniel during my last project trip in December 2023,” tells Marcel Wagner, Country Director of ADRA Austria. “His story is a compelling example to share of the journey towards hope and social integration, particularly on the occasion of the World Day of Social Justice.

Daniel moves skillfully on his hands; his upper body is strong, and his face radiates confidence. However, his legs deny him the ability to walk upright. He shared with me the story of his illness, which struck him and his mother when he was 3 years old. At that time, his father only took his mother to the hospital, but Daniel also recovered from the illness. Unfortunately, the disease, for which he never received treatment, weakened his knees. Despite feeling no pain, he is paralyzed from the knees downwards. Despite this challenge, he cultivates a small piece of land—a truly admirable accomplishment.

Daniel is part of a group cared for by the ADRA Health Group. He not only receives treatments and support that enhance his stability and quality of life but also assistance in social integration. However, his dreams extend beyond his current challenges. He possesses the skill to trade in processed foods and wants to use this talent to sell his goods over the phone.

Yet, realizing these dreams is currently challenging. Hunger and physical limitations pose hurdles he cannot overcome alone. This is where the ADRA Health Group comes into play.

Supporting Independence: ADRA Health Groups Make a Difference

The Health Group provides treatments and supports integration into training programs. The vision of this group goes beyond healthcare—they aspire to integrate individuals with disabilities into both the workforce and the village community. It serves as a platform where they can raise awareness, protect themselves from diseases, and collaboratively develop solutions to their problems.

Now is the time for us to stand side by side with this courageous young man. His story serves as a reminder to me that together, we can achieve more.”

World Day of Social Justice aims to promote efforts to tackle issues such as poverty, exclusion, and inequality. It emphasizes the importance of fostering a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and live a life of dignity.
