International Day of the Girl Child – Protecting Vulnerable Girls

ADRA Strengthens Protection of Vulnerable Girls in Thailand with the “Keep Girls Safe” Project

On the occasion of the International Day of the Girl, ADRA Germany e.V. highlights the ongoing issue of human trafficking in Thailand. Girls from ethnic minorities and stateless families are particularly affected. Through the “Keep Girls Safe” project, ADRA actively supports these girls, providing them with protection, assistance, and education. ADRA is also involved in empowering girls in other countries.

In Thailand, girls from stateless families, disadvantaged ethnic minorities, and poor rural areas often fall victim to exploitation and forced labor. Lacking basic protective measures, they become prey to traffickers who exploit their vulnerability. To address this, ADRA launched the “Keep Girls Safe” project in Thailand in 2021.

A Safe Haven for Girls
The “Keep Girls Safe” project provides a secure shelter for these vulnerable girls, where they receive not only protection but also access to education and social support. ADRA works closely with local partners and authorities to empower these girls in the long term and help them achieve self-determined futures.

Raising Awareness in Communities
In addition to directly protecting the girls, ADRA carries out extensive awareness-raising efforts in the affected communities. The goal is to increase awareness of children’s and girls’ rights and to bring about a lasting cultural change. Through awareness campaigns and collaboration with local leaders, ADRA aims to support vulnerable families and undermine the basis for human traffickers’ activities.

Aid for Women and Girls in Need in Lebanon
ADRA’s efforts to protect and empower girls extend beyond Thailand. In Lebanon, a project launched in 2023 aims to promote the dignity, rights, and health of girls and women. Amidst the country’s worst economic crisis, ADRA provides hygiene items and menstrual products. The aid package includes disposable sanitary pads, underwear, towels, soap, shampoo, detergent, and bleach. As part of this project, women and girls receive comprehensive support to meet their hygiene and sanitation needs.

The material aid is supplemented by educational events focused on menstrual health and hygiene practices. During these gatherings, girls and women also share their daily struggles and develop solutions to be seen and respected as equal partners in society.
