A reflection by Thomas Petracek, Head of Programs, ADRA Europe
May 15th is the International Day of Families. Today we celebrate one of the greatest foundations of civilization – the family. Without families, there is no future for humanity. Each of us has a father and a mother who gave us life, a life that originates in God’s Creation.
What does family mean to you?
For me, family has many dimensions: my parents and siblings; my own family – my wife, children, and grandchildren; my close relatives; my sisters and brothers in the church; my colleagues in the ADRA family; my nation and homeland, united by shared culture, history, language, and roots; and finally, the entire human family, sharing the same joys, challenges, hopes, and fears that belong to us all.
Too often, we forget that we are not only individuals and that the world is not centered solely around ourselves. Being part of a family always involves relationships, responsibilities, respect, and honoring others – and this is true at every level of family life.
Yet the closest and most precious family is our own home, where a unique space for life is created. What a blessing that is.
In the Bible, the wise King Solomon says in Proverbs: “Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.” This remarkable verse connects three generations and reminds us of the deeper purpose of life — the journey between youth and old age. Each of us walks this path. We carry our history behind us while still holding the future before us. From childhood to old age, we remain part of a family, whether we realize it or not. And at the end of our journey, who would not wish to wear such a crown?
Family is the foundation of society, and we must give it greater attention. We should celebrate families, support them, value them, and restore them as a cornerstone of our lives and our civil society.
In practical terms: stop the crisis and wars, and let families live and thrive. Love children. Honor parents. Care for the elderly. Bring generations together so they can learn from one another.
Life is short, but it is made beautiful through families.
